BOOK 2 POST
Mini Book Review: Resilient: How to Grow an Unshakable Core of Calm, Strength, and Happiness by Dr. Rick Hanson
I chose Resilient by Dr. Rick Hanson for class, but the themes in this book couldn’t have landed at a better time in my life. Recently, I’ve been on a journey of choosing myself — putting my own happiness and peace first before trying to meet the expectations of others. That’s exactly what this book aims to help with: building inner strength and emotional resilience in a world that constantly pulls us in different directions.
I’ll be honest — I didn’t read the entire book. But even from what I’ve learned through its themes, I found a lot that resonated. The emphasis on self-compassion stood out the most. Like many people, I tend to be hard on myself, constantly pushing for more, often at the cost of burnout. Resilient seems to argue for a healthier balance: accountability without cruelty, discipline without self-destruction. That mindset shift — taking life one step at a time — is something I’m learning to embody more each day.
That said, I’m not big on overly “self-helpy” books that sugarcoat reality. Life is full of sacrifice and hard choices — and I believe in facing that honestly. Parts of this book lean too much into feel-good clichés, it’s not exactly my cup of tea. But the core message? It’s real. The idea that putting yourself first can help you attract what’s truly meant for you — that’s something I’ve felt deeply.
I’d recommend Resilient to anyone learning how to stand stronger in themselves. Especially if you're at a turning point in life where you’re choosing to heal, to grow, and to move forward — one unshakable step at a time.
Hi Giorgio - I really enjoying reading this book review and appreciate how you touched on both the positives and negatives. I'm glad this book really spoke to you in terms of where you are in your life, and I feel like putting yourself first is always a good reminder. It sounds like a really interesting read.
ReplyDeleteHi Giorgio. I really enjoyed reading your review. Putting ourselves first in this day in age is always said to be selfish but I think its the opposite. We need to put ourselves first and become mentally strong to be able to create genuine relationships. I also read this book and I think your review did a great job of explaining the key points.
